En effet, à la fin des années 1980, les producteurs de Monoï cherchent à protéger leur savoir-faire authentique (l'enfleurage du tiaré de Tahiti dans une huile de coprah issue de noix de coco polynésiennes) de la concurrence de produits contrefaits, souvent à base d'huiles minérales et parfois de parfums synthétiques !
