  • Dr. Lara Devgan's Platinum Lip Plump has gone viral on TikTok.
  • The glossy formula uses niacin to give significant plumping results in seconds.
  • The Platinum Lip Plump also contains a peptide complex to hydrate and add volume to lips.

Anyone remember DuWop Cosmetics' Lip Venom? (Shout-out to all you millennials.) For Gen Zers who never got to try the iconic lip plumper of the early aughts, let me paint a picture for you. You're getting ready to hang out with your crew in front of the local movie theater, hoping your crush notices your cool chunky highlights and fresh pair of Steve Madden platform slides. You swipe on a layer of Lip Venom to make your mouth more kissable, and . . . an intense stinging begins. Though the sticky gloss did give a distinct flush of color, it came at a price. The unpleasant burning sensation that the blend of cinnamon, wintergreen, and ginger caused will forever be etched in my memory.

So, long story short: I'm skeptical of lip plumpers - both for their efficacy and the discomfort that tags along with these kinds of formulas. Still, when I saw that the Dr. Lara Devgan Platinum Lip Plump ($50) was getting some serious hype on TikTok, I decided to give a plumper another try.

What made this product stand out to me? First off, the board-certified dermatologist and plastic surgeon behind it, Lara Devgan, MD. I've been lucky enough to get a microinfusion facial from her skillful hands, so I know she's legit. Plus, a few of the other products in her medical-grade line are some of my ride-or-dies, namely the Hyaluronic Serum and Reservatrol Night Cream.

But the real make-or-break element of a lip plumper is the formula. Instead of using ingredients like chili pepper, bee venom, cinnamon, or menthol to cause blood flow to the lips, Dr. Devgan's star of the show is niacin (vitamin B3). Rather than use an irritant to cause a plumping effect, niacin triggers a relaxation of those teeny superficial blood vessels, which gives a mild flush and makes your lips look one to two millimeters larger.

Beyond niacin, the Platinum Lip Plump has a mix of molecular-weight hyaluronic acid and a ceramide-rich peptide complex to soften, hydrate, and smooth fine lines on the lips.

Let's get to what you really came for: does it sting? I'm happy to report, it does not. When you apply the doe-foot wand to your lips, you'll start to feel a slight tingling after a few seconds, but definitely no pain or discomfort. After another few minutes, you'll see your lips start to look fuller and more flushed - the photo above was taken about five minutes after application. I should mention that on another application, I accidentally applied the gloss outside of my lip line (which Dr. Devgan says to avoid), and the area of skin got that same pink flush for about a half hour.

As you can see, it does mimic the look of subtle lip fillers. The glossy-but-not-sticky sheen and plumpness last for about two hours before having to reapply, which I think is the perfect amount of time for a dinner or night out. And while it may feel like $50 is a lot to spend on a lip product, it definitely beats shelling out hundreds every few months for lip injections (not to mention the pain associated with filler appointments).

So all in all: does the product work? Yes. Is it worth the price tag? Up to you. IMO, if you are on the fence about fillers and want to try out the look for a fraction of the price (and pain), this is your answer.
